Beauty Should Be Good For You

The beauty industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, and it continues to grow each year. One thing that is changing in the industry is people are paying attention to what is in their products and their safety. The importance of what goes on your skin is arguably just as important as what you put in your body. Clean beauty products and companies are on the rise. More and more companies are emerging with safer options for consumers. Your skin is your largest organ, so what goes on it should matter.

Clean Beauty

There are so many amazing options these days when it comes to clean makeup, skincare and body care. Back when organic became a trend the beauty products that were considered safer just didn’t pass the test when it came to their performance. Thankfully, that is not the case anymore. I’ve worked with the company Beautycounter for the past 6 years. Their standards go above and beyond. They care about the health of their consumers while taking care of the planet. Everything is ethically made and sourced, and their products’ quality has exceeded my expectations. Beautycounter is a Bcorp, Leaping Bunny certified and EWG certified. They also created a never list. It’s a list of questionable ingredients that you will never find in their products. Beauty Industry Standards

We have a long way to go regarding regulating the beauty industry. Canada is way ahead of the US, in Canada we restrict 600 ingredients from personal care products, and the US only restricts 30. Europe is in the lead, they have banned more than 1600 ingredients. When looking at the health and safety of products many companies look at short-term side effects such as rashes, or eye irritation. Very few companies look at things like hormone disrupters or cancer-causing ingredients. EWG Skin Deep is a great resource to look up the safety of your products. You type in the name of the product and it searches its database. They rate products on a scale from EWG certified, which means the company is transparent and meets the high standards of product safety, to 10. 10 being the worst. They score products for common concerns such as cancer-causing ingredients, allergies and immunotoxicity, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and use restrictions. This is my go-to website when I’m shopping for personal care products for my family. http://www.ewg.org

Fragrance and Beauty

In Canada and the US, when you use the words: fragrance, parfum, aroma, or flavour you are not required to list the ingredients that make up the scent of the product. If something you are considering buying has one of these ingredients just know they may contain chemicals of concern and the company is not required to disclose them. I steer clear from fragrance unless it’s a high-quality essential oil.

change In the Beauty Industry

Thankfully, many companies are raising their standards and changing the way they make their products. Companies like Beautycounter are stepping up and working with governments to change laws so products are safer. We still have so much work to do. Vote by choosing companies that care about your health. Where you spend your money is you telling companies you care. Pay attention to the things you put on your skin, the food you eat, and where and how your clothing is made. Every choice you make matters. I hope this inspires you to be a conscious consumer.
